Rock Lyrics Vol. 12 – Friday

Alright! It’s Friday! TGIF and all that. I’ve been waiting for today impatiently. This entry into my Weekday series of posts is going to blow your mind.

As soon as anyone mentions Friday in a music sense, you immediately think of Rebecca Black. Love her or hate her, that’s what you think of. With over 100 MILLION views of her video, you can’t be blamed. However, the song ‘Friday’ has an old and esteemed pedigree that will surprise you! A very knowledgeable gentleman will fill you in with all the details and surprising facts at the beginning of the video. I was astounded.

Also, keep an eye on who announces the band in the video! NCIS fans will find this quite ducky. (ATTN: the volume increases a lot after intro talk)

Friday

The Byrds

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta get dressed, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have my cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, gotta see my friends
I see my friends

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, and you got this
My friend is by my side
I got this, and you got this
Now you know it

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Rock Lyrics Vol. 11 – Thursday

Well, we have reached Thursday, and everybody shrugs. Thursday is just the day before Friday, nothing more. I know I can hardly wait for Friday! However, it’s just Thursday, and I really can’t say anything that isn’t better described in the lyrics.

Harry Edward Nilsson III, better known as Nilsson, was born in Brooklyn in 1941, had a few hit singles, mostly in the 70’s, although he was much more a songwriter than a performing singer. In fact, he never toured or had concerts. He was quite content to be a songwriter for other musicians and movie scores. He passed away quite prematurely in 1994 of heart failure. One of the good ones gone too soon.

But, this isn’t about Nilsson. This is about Thursday. Give a listen to this jazzy, bluezy, crooning ballad and follow along with the lyrics. Quite interesting!

Nilsson

Thursday

here’s why i did not go to work today
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
thursday has its own peculiar way
of saying hey
sometimes thursday almost
makes you want to run away
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day

yeah, thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
let’s go have a picnic
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
hope it doesn’t rain
when i’m feeling thursday
i go and have a drink
if thursday was a boat
i’d let it sink

i did it on monday
i tried it on tuesday
wednesday’s simply not my cup of tea
thank heaven it’s friday
thank the lord for the weekend
but thursday is such a crazy lazy day

they say monday’s child is full of grace
tuesday’s child is fair of face
thursday’s child has far to go
and it’s no wonder
when the week becomes a rat race
you can bet win, show, or place
but never bet on thursday
cause god’s not on its case

thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
don’t get me wrong
it’s just that thursday’s twice as long as it should be
it’s twice as long
monday’s tuesdays, weekends, fridays
don’t get in my way
but thursday’s such a crazy lazy day

monday is a blues day
that goes for tuesday
wednesday’s just the middle of the week, yeah
friday’s just another payday
the weekend’s just another heyday
but thursday’s surreptitiously unique

that’s why i didn’t go to work today
thursday’s got its own peculiar way
of saying hey
sometimes thursday makes you want to run away
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day

The Upcoming Week

For the rock song lyrics project I am doing, there will be two main themes in the upcoming week:

  • Songs about the life of a rock star, as written by rock stars
  • Songs about the days of the week

There will be one or two surprises in both series, but I was most surprised by the life of a rock star tunes. As I told you in this post, I rarely listen to the lyrics of a song, so I was totally taken aback when I researched songs for this series. “That’s what this song is about?!? Who knew?” Well, people who listen to lyrics knew. I didn’t.  😳

As for the days of the week, some songs will probably pop into your head automatically … say, for instance, Monday, Friday and Saturday. You may be surprised that I didn’t go with some obvious choices. You’ll have to wait and see! I’m starting the week off with Monday, because for me that’s when the week starts. And because I really like the upcoming Sunday post and I want to save it for last. It’s fun!

I may throw in a random post here or there as well as these themed series. For instance, today we are going out to Shaw’s Maple Syrup & Pancake House (along with several thousand other people, I’m sure) and I’ll take some photographs and make a post about the trip. Life goes on.
