Rock Lyrics Vol. 19 – RIP Starman

Born – David Robert Jones – January 8 1947.

Died – David Bowie – January 10 2016.

“RIP Starman. To say we’ll miss you doesn’t even scratch the surface.”

You will find 3 videos below; the first is the oft-heard radio version we are all so familiar with; the second is a very rare screening of the original promotional film from 1969; and the third is a choir of ordinary people paying homage to a star. I watched all three. You should too.

Space Oddity

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom (Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six)
Commencing countdown, engines on (Five, Four, Three)
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you (Two, One, Liftoff)

This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

“This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in the most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do
Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows”

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?

“Can you hear And I’m floating around my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.”

Change Of Perspective

When doing the Rock Music Lyrics series of posts, I have been doing just that … concentrating on the lyrics alone. Upon reflecting over the summer, I’ve decided that a change of perspective is in order, especially with the addition of the Seminal category.

“seminal” – highly original, influential, and important – highly original and influencing the development of future events

As well as commenting on and displaying the lyrics of a song, I’m going to also comment on the use of the music construction and the instruments used, which put together, add interpretation to the meaning of the lyrics. Which upon reading back, is really really confusing. I know what I want to do, however I’m finding it difficult to explain. I am far FAR from a music expert. I can only write down what I feel in my gut and my brain. Please bear with me as I move forward.

I believe there is a way to “pin” this post at the top of the main page. If I succeed in doing that, please use the Categories link to explore the various posts.

Thanks very much for dropping by. Cheers!
