Rock Lyrics Vol. 14 – Sunday Morning

This is the last post for my Weekday series. To review, there was Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

And now we have Sunday Morning, in the evening (it’s Monday in Australia), but let’s not quibble. We are doing Sunday.

Even though these lyrics don’t have a whole lot to do with Sunday, it’s a fun, lively, ageless tune and it features Gwen Stefani. Need I say more?

The lyrics are about her breakup with Tony Kanal, a member of the band, as portrayed by the fellow sitting on the swing. In that sense, it is kind of a sad song, but it ends with a food fight, so all is well.

From the 1995 album Tragic Kingdom. Enjoy!

Sunday Morning

No Doubt

Sappy pathetic little me
That was the girl I used to be
You had me on my knees

I’d trade you places any day
I’d never thought you could be that way
But you looked like me on Sunday

You came in with the breeze
On Sunday morning
You sure have changed since yesterday
Without any warning
I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you well, so well

You’re trying my shoes on for a change
They look so good but fit so strange
Out of fashion, so I can complain

You came in with the breeze
On Sunday morning
You sure have changed since yesterday
Without any warning
I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you well, so well

I know who I am, but who are you?
You’re not looking like you used to
You’re on the other side of the mirror
So nothing’s looking quite as clear
Thank you for turning on the lights
Thank you, now you’re the parasite
I didn’t think you had it in you
And now you’re looking like I used to!

You came in with the breeze
On Sunday morning
You sure have changed since yesterday
Without any warning
And you want me badly
Because you cannot have me
I thought I knew you
But I’ve got a new view
I thought I knew you well, oh well

On Sunday morning
And I don’t want it
Sunday morning
I thought I knew you
Sunday morning
Oh you want me badly
Can have it
Sunday morning
Sunday morning
Sunday morning

Thanks for coming out! Live Long And Prosper.

Rock Lyrics Vol. 13 – Saturday

I couldn’t decide which tune to use for the Saturday entry in my Weekday series, but because the theme of these posts is lyrics, I have decided upon Another Saturday Night by Cat Stevens (regardless of whatever name he goes by now). It had the better lyrics, as far as I’m concerned.

This tune was originally released by Sam Cooke in 1963, then Cat Stevens in 1974, followed by Jimmy Buffett in 1993. I believe the Cat Stevens release is the most widely known, and is the version that reached the highest level on the charts.

Without further ado, here is Cat performing in a live concert in 1976:

Another Saturday Night

Cat Stevens

Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

I got in town a month ago
I’ve seen a lotta girls since then
If I could meet em I can get em, but as yet I haven’t met em
Thats how I’m in the state I’m in

Oh, another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

Another fella told me
He had a sister who looked just fine
Instead of being my deliverance, she had a strange resemblance
To a cat named Frankenstein

Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

It’s hard on a fella
When he don’t know his way around
If I don’t find me a honey to help me spend my money
I’m gonna have to blow this town

Oh, no, another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money ’cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

I’m in an awful way (He’s in an awful way)
I’m in an awful way, oooh, I’m in an awful way
(He’s in an awful way)

Rock Lyrics Vol. 12 – Friday

Alright! It’s Friday! TGIF and all that. I’ve been waiting for today impatiently. This entry into my Weekday series of posts is going to blow your mind.

As soon as anyone mentions Friday in a music sense, you immediately think of Rebecca Black. Love her or hate her, that’s what you think of. With over 100 MILLION views of her video, you can’t be blamed. However, the song ‘Friday’ has an old and esteemed pedigree that will surprise you! A very knowledgeable gentleman will fill you in with all the details and surprising facts at the beginning of the video. I was astounded.

Also, keep an eye on who announces the band in the video! NCIS fans will find this quite ducky. (ATTN: the volume increases a lot after intro talk)

Friday

The Byrds

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta get dressed, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have my cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, gotta see my friends
I see my friends

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, and you got this
My friend is by my side
I got this, and you got this
Now you know it

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Rock Lyrics Vol. 11 – Thursday

Well, we have reached Thursday, and everybody shrugs. Thursday is just the day before Friday, nothing more. I know I can hardly wait for Friday! However, it’s just Thursday, and I really can’t say anything that isn’t better described in the lyrics.

Harry Edward Nilsson III, better known as Nilsson, was born in Brooklyn in 1941, had a few hit singles, mostly in the 70’s, although he was much more a songwriter than a performing singer. In fact, he never toured or had concerts. He was quite content to be a songwriter for other musicians and movie scores. He passed away quite prematurely in 1994 of heart failure. One of the good ones gone too soon.

But, this isn’t about Nilsson. This is about Thursday. Give a listen to this jazzy, bluezy, crooning ballad and follow along with the lyrics. Quite interesting!

Nilsson

Thursday

here’s why i did not go to work today
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
thursday has its own peculiar way
of saying hey
sometimes thursday almost
makes you want to run away
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day

yeah, thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
let’s go have a picnic
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
hope it doesn’t rain
when i’m feeling thursday
i go and have a drink
if thursday was a boat
i’d let it sink

i did it on monday
i tried it on tuesday
wednesday’s simply not my cup of tea
thank heaven it’s friday
thank the lord for the weekend
but thursday is such a crazy lazy day

they say monday’s child is full of grace
tuesday’s child is fair of face
thursday’s child has far to go
and it’s no wonder
when the week becomes a rat race
you can bet win, show, or place
but never bet on thursday
cause god’s not on its case

thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
don’t get me wrong
it’s just that thursday’s twice as long as it should be
it’s twice as long
monday’s tuesdays, weekends, fridays
don’t get in my way
but thursday’s such a crazy lazy day

monday is a blues day
that goes for tuesday
wednesday’s just the middle of the week, yeah
friday’s just another payday
the weekend’s just another heyday
but thursday’s surreptitiously unique

that’s why i didn’t go to work today
thursday’s got its own peculiar way
of saying hey
sometimes thursday makes you want to run away
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
thursday’s such a crazy lazy day
